Just like people, countries also have an astrology chart, and I wanted to share with you some things I’ve noticed about the charts of the UK and its leader, Alexander Boris de Pfeffel Johnson, given that our country is at such a significant moment in its history.

The United Kingdom officially came in being on 1st January 1801, when Great Britain joined with Ireland. (btw, for those non-Brits, England is a part of Great Britain, which is a part of the United Kingdom – it’s a bit like those Russian nesting dolls.)

So the UK is a Capricorn country, as it has the Sun in this sign. You can see the characteristics of this sign in that it is all about tradition and the establishment. Capricorn, like the mountain goat, wants to climb to the top and so there can be a sense of superiority. Capricorn very much describes the British Empire – the sense of entitlement to claim sovereignty over and rule other countries.

Capricorn is the sign related to hierarchy, very fitting for a country whose history is defined by its rigid class system of royalty, aristocracy and the working class (aka the peasants!)

Capricorn, like its ruler Saturn, can also be somewhat serious, cold, unemotional and reserved. This is, generally speaking, the nature of the British culture – the stiff upper lip, keeping all feelings under wraps. And exemplified by the famous World War II slogan ‘keep calm and carry on’.

Now, planets or Angles in a chart move very slowly by Progression, which is one of the essential timing devices in astrology. Important progressions do not happen that often, which is what makes them so key when they do.

There is some truly astonishing synastry between the Progressed UK chart and the new Prime Minister’s natal chart, which describes the major impact he will have on the future of the United Kingdom.

Roughly speaking, angles and the inner planets of Sun, Mercury and Venus move 1 degree of 1 sign per year – so very, very slowly.

Johnson is a Gemini – with not just his Sun, but also his Mercury, Venus and Mars in this sign.

On the 23rd July the Progressed Ascendant of the UK chart was at 19 Gemini 20, exactly on top of Johnson’s Mercury (the ruler of his Sun) at 19 Gemini 19.

(The first number here indicates the degree of Gemini, and there are 30 degrees in each sign. The second number is the fraction of the degree – aka minutes – of which there are 60 in each degree.)

In addition, the Progressed Venus of the UK chart was at 28 Gemini, the exact same degree of Johnson’s Venus and his Sun. Both the UK and Johnson have Libra rising, and hence Venus is the ruler of both charts and thus carries extra significance.

In plain English this describes how the evolution of the United Kingdom (as shown by progressions) came to exactly line up with Johnson’s chart at the time of his election. And thus at this time their destinies are intrinsically linked. (Only once every 360 years would these Progressed planets line up with the key features of Johnson’s chart).

Everything is a matter of timing and right now it’s Boris’ time.

Johnson has a lot of Air in his chart – not just all the planets in Gemini, but also he has Libra rising. This describes how he can charm people and how he has a gift for speaking in a way that gains much public support. At the same time, though, Geminis are notoriously fickle and can change what they say and do at any moment without hesitation (you know it’s true, Geminis!).

The Libra/Gemini combination suggests he is clever enough to create whatever public persona will best suit his ambitions, and like a chameleon change this in any moment. (One small, but telling, example of this is how for years he portrayed an image of a loveable, eccentric character with his distinctive floppy, dishevelled, blond mop. And then as soon as there was a chance of him running the country he cut his hair short to change his image and show himself as a serious politician.)

Historian Greg Jenner wrote that Johnson had “weaponised his hair as iconic branding”. “I’ve seen him deliberately mess it up before giving a speech,” he wrote.

Johnson also has his Moon (the ruler of his 10th house and hence the significator of his career) in Scorpio, suggesting a ruthless nature and intense need for power and control.

Back to the UK chart. Of great significance here is that the Sun is in mutual reception with Saturn. This means that the Sun is in Saturn’s sign (Capricorn) and Capricorn is in the Sun’s sign (Leo). This represents a possible course of action that would strengthen the nation of the United Kingdom.

Saturn is in the 11th house – of friends, allies, organisations and the collective. In this particular instance it can symbolise the EU. To me this is a strong indication that the UK can greater strengthen its sovereignty (Leo), sense of identity and the prosperity of the nation as a whole through working together with the EU rather than going it alone.

A mutual reception indicates a potential great benefit, but one in which action must be taken that embodies the symbolism in order to manifest the good fortune.

Also, interestingly, the Progressed Sun in the UK’s chart is right now at 14 Leo 31 and the cusp of the 11th house is 14 Leo 55. The Progressed Sun symbolises the deep unfolding of a person’s (or in this case a country’s) life path. It take 365 years to go all the way around the chart, so how amazing that right now in the midst of Brexit it is about to enter the 11th house – showing how the UK’s existence is right now intrinsically tied up with the EU.

And with the UK’s Progressed Jupiter (good fortune, opportunity, abundance, happy outcomes) also right there at 15 Leo, to me this is another clear sign that the path of great fortune for the UK right now is with its friends and allies. Progressed Sun in 11th is a time of co-operation and working together. It is not a time for going it alone.

(So, please if anybody knows Mr Johnson, please let him know about the astrology – I am sure this will change his mind!)

Yet, being a Capricorn country means that the UK essentially wants to be in charge and have complete control of all its affairs. And does not like the loss of autonomy that being in the EU brings.

The main transits of 2019 relate to Saturn – as it opposes the Moon in the country chart and squares the Nodes of the Moon. The Moon in a country chart symbolises the populace (while the Sun is the government / head of state). The transit to the Moon began in early 2019 and continues until the end of the year. This suggests a difficult time for the people as a whole – maybe reflected in the worsening economy caused by Brexit – the value of the pound dropping (at its lowest rate to the US Dollar since 1985), businesses leaving the UK for other locations in Europe, and the prices of everyday goods rising).

Saturn tends to symbolism restriction, challenge and difficult times. Its square to the nodes may also suggest a significant and undesirable change to the destiny of the country.

Finally, from October 2019 to October 2020, Progressed Venus moves through the last degree of Gemini. Being the chart ruler (due to the Libra Ascendant) this may indicate a period of crisis before Venus moves into Cancer (‘home’ rule, perhaps).

The one beneficial movement, is the Progressed Sun conjunct Jupiter in the 11th house. This could suggest that the EU is actually be of great assistance to the UK, and not the mortal enemy that Johnson claims).

If I were a betting man (which I am, though I invariably lose) my take on this astrology is that Brexit will happen and it will be bad for the country. (I know, you don’t need to be an astrologer to predict this! But certainly the astrology backs it up).

I should say, though, that it’s one thing to be able to see the significance and symbolism of planetary movements, it is quite another to accurately predict what this will mean in reality.

For me, astrology is a tool for helping us to understand what is in our best interests and then taking action to that effect rather than a predict-the-future device. It guides us in how to move along the line of good fortune. And so what I can say in summary is

1) the omens clearly point to the UK being much better off in the EU at this time (Sun-Saturn mutual reception; Progressed Sun conjunct 11th house cusp and conjunct the greater benefic Jupiter)
2) the UK strongly desires its own autonomy (Sun in Capricorn)
3) Boris Johnson has enormous power over the future of the UK right now, in spite of the fact that any decision requires the backing of parliament (major UK progressions directly on top of 3 key planets in Johnson’s chart).
