During 2020 Jupiter and Saturn have been meeting in the sky, in what is known as a great conjunction. This synodic cycle occurs every 20 years, and is said to describe the Zeitgeist – the ‘spirit of the times’.
What is most interesting about the upcoming conjunction is that it happens in Aquarius, an Air sign. The Jupiter/Saturn conjunction happens in the same element for roughly 200 years. Since 1802 these 2 planets have been coming together in Earth signs. The last time they were in Air signs was almost 800 years ago.
Actually, this shift has already been taking place. Jupiter and Saturn did come together in Air for the first time in 1980, but 20 years later (and also earlier this year) they were back in Earth. So we’ve been in a transitional period for the last 40 years, before fully moving into the Air realm in December.
This symbolises a very significant paradigm shift for humanity, a movement away from Earthly expressions, which will be seen in so many different realms of life.
For example, in the last 40 years we’ve had the exponential growth of technology (Air), from the initial computers, the size of a small fridge, to the super powerful tiny devices in our pockets that we very occasionally make phone calls on.
In the near future we will likely find that there will be no need for a physical (Earth) device at all. Wireless (Air) technology is now commonplace, and so much of our information is stored in the ‘cloud’.
Architecture is moving away from functional designs to buildings with much more glass and natural light, giving them a more airy feel.
And, very significantly, the production of energy will also rapidly change. At the time that Jupiter and Saturn first met in Earth 200 years ago we had the birth of the Industrial Revolution and, soon after, the invention of the internal combustion engine. Energy production was dirty, noisy, mined from the ground and extremely polluting. (The heart of the industrial revolution was a place that became known as the Black Country, in the English midlands. In 1841 the average age of death in Dudley was just 16 years and 7 months.)
As of 2018, fossil fuels made up 85% of all energy consumption, but its dominance is coming to an end as we enter this Air period. On the horizon is much cleaner, and potentially even free, energy sources. Aquarius is the sign of innovation, as well as being humanitarian in nature – giving the possibility of all people having access to these new energy production methods, not just those few with the power and influence. Nikola Tesla, who reportedly already invented free energy devices over a century ago, had both his Moon and Mars in Aquarius.
Incidentally, windmills first started to be used in Europe right around the last time that the Jupiter and Saturn conjunction moved into Air signs, 800 years ago. According to Wikipedia, the earliest reference to a windmill in Northern Europe dates from 1185.
What is also particularly interesting and noteworthy is that the first Jupiter-Saturn conjunction of this new cycle happens on December 21st 2020 – the winter solstice in the Northern Hemisphere. This is a day that signifies the ‘return of the light’ as the Sun has reached its furthest point (being overhead the Tropic of Capricorn this day).
While we are in the midst of something of a crisis time on Earth (you may have noticed), the new Jupiter-Saturn cycle certainly holds the potential for a great leap forwards for humanity, in the midst of the old structures falling away. And I think the fact that Jupiter and Saturn meet on the day that the light returns carries powerful symbolic significance.
As an aside, it has been said that it was a great conjunction of Jupiter and Saturn that was the star that the three wise men (reputed to have been astrologers) saw as an omen of the birth of Jesus, and this is what is meant by them ‘following the star’ to find him. This conjunction happened in the sign of Pisces – the fish – a symbol that has become closely identified with him.
So maybe the message burnt large into the mountain where I live ‘Cristo Viene’ (Christ is coming) is true!
Though the ‘new saviour’ is more likely to be of an airy or Aquarian nature – the collective will and communities coming together in a spirit of non-hierarchical equality, along with a healthy relationship with and use of technology, that can bring about profound societal shifts.
