The most common use of astrology is looking at it from the perspective of time. In terms of a Natal Chart, the exact moment a person is born, and then how this chart is affected by the movement of the planets through time (Transits and Progressions).

What is less well known is that space also has an effect on our charts and hence our lives. Moving to a different location can bring to the fore planets (and hence the archetypical energies that they symbolise) that were in the background at the place where we were born. So Locational Astrology shows how our natal chart changes through space, and suggests the kind of experiences that we may have in different places. Certain locations can be good for work or relationships, where opportunities are more likely to happen.

Locational Astrology can be used if one is considering a move to a new place (as long as it is far enough away – e.g. a move to a town 50 miles away won’t make much difference). It can help a person to decide whether the move would be beneficial to them. Or if they are trying to decide between different options, then Locational Astrology can help them to figure out which would be the better move. For example, if a location brought Saturn to the fore, then this would be a place of hard work, restriction and struggle for a person. If Jupiter became prominent through the move, then the place holds opportunities and a sense of expansion and for them.

It can also provide new insights into a person’s natal chart should they now live away from their place of birth. While the natal chart is still perfectly valid, if one has moved away from ones’ place of birth, then the new location may well highlight features of the natal chart that are not so prominent at the place of birth.

It can even be used to decide on where in the world would be a favourable spot for a holiday. Sometimes we feel drawn to a particular country without really knowing why, and Locational Astrology can help us to understand what we may find in a particular place. We could say that energetically we are indeed called to certain places throughout our lives, because there is some experience that we need to have there. It can be interesting to explore areas of the world that hold an interest for us, whether or not we have been there, and see what relationship that place has to our natal astrology charts.

Above you can see an AstroCartography map, which is one of the tools use in Locational Astrology. This map is for John Lennon. Each of the lines that you see relates to one of the planets, and shows where that planet’s energy becomes especially prominent in a person’s life.

You don’t necessarily even have to visit a place for it to have an influence on your life. For instance the Venus line (Venus symbolises relationships) on John Lennon’s chart passes straight through Japan, very close to Tokyo where Yoko Ono was born! You can see it more clearly on the close-up map below, look for the white line with the Venus symbol, just to the west of Tokyo.
